George graduated from UConn in 1979 with a B.S. in Production Management. He worked for a local construction company as a project manager from 1983 to 1987, and started Mattern Construction in August 1987. George enjoys all types of outdoor activities including skiing, golf, kayaking, and bicycle riding.
David Labonne
Vice President
images/staff/43.jpgDave has been with Mattern since 1994. He is a graduate of Norwich Regional Vocational Technical School and Mohegan Community Technical College. Dave began his career with us as an assistant field superintendent, later moved into project management, and is currently our chief estimator.
Throughout the years, Dave served as project manager on many major projects including Backus Hospital, Jewett City Bank, and Connecticut College to name a few.
Dave is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, gardening and golf.
Robert MacKenzie
Vice President of Field Operations
images/staff/45.jpgBob has been with Mattern since 1988. He attended high school and college in California where he started his own roofing business. Bob was self employed for four years with expertise in various types of concrete clay and slate roofing systems. After moving to Connecticut in 1987 he worked for a local construction company for two years before coming to Mattern. Bob enjoys family and home projects.
Susan Burns, CPA
Vice President of Finance
images/staff/8.jpgSusan has been with Mattern since November of 2000. Prior to that, she worked in a local public accounting firm. Sue is a graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University with a B.S. in Accounting and is a member of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. Sue spent many years volunteering in the Ledyard School system, holding positions of PTO chairman and treasurer. She is very active in Ledyard Congregational Church, serving as chairman of the Missions committee for years and currently serving as a Deacon of the church. Her hobbies include kayaking, quilting and golf.
Tim Gallimore
Project Manager

He has 15 years experience in construction supervision and management, having worked on large regional projects including Millstone Unit III, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Museum & Research Center and the UConn Bio-Physics and Ag-Physics Lab Facilities. Tim enjoys fishing, camping, music and Civil War/American History. He is an Eagle Scout BSA and NRA Distinguished Expert Rifleman.
Michael Brown
Project Manager
images/staff/10.jpgMichael came to Mattern in December 2006 as an Estimator and has since moved to Project Management. He is a 2006 graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston , Massachusetts, with a BS in Construction Engineering Technology. Mike was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter and is currently a member of the Poquetanuck Volunteer Fire Department holding the following certifications: EMT-B, FireFighter2, HazMat Operations, CDL Class B. Mike received the EMS/FireFighter of the Year award for 2008.
Larry Wise
Estimator / Project Manager
images/staff/11.jpgLarry started with Mattern in July 1996 and has been in the construction business since the mid 1970s. Larry’s extensive background includes many phases of construction including concrete work, framing, and commercial work. He had the pleasure of being the supervisor for some very creative projects ranging from Barry Gibbs’ recording studio in Miami Beach to the 85-foot realistic turtle replica at the Mashantucket Cultural Center. Larry is very involved in many parental activities such as the Boy Scouts, PTA, Little League, etc. His true passion is mountaineering and has made many assents in the Rockies and the White Mountains
Thomas Weber
Estimator
images/staff/12.jpgThomas worked at Mattern from 1990 to 1995 and returned in 2008. He has experience in all phase of residential and commercial construction beginning in 1967. He has worked as a carpenter, superintendent, project manager and estimator. Tom has been a building official since 1999 and is Connecticut State Certified. He also served in the US Navy for ten years as a radioman. Tom’s hobbies include bowling and church activities.
Abbey Jessee
Administrative Assistant
images/staff/13.jpgAbbey came to Mattern in December of 2000. She has spent the last nine years coordinating the administration of our projects and also helping with estimating. She is a 2000 graduate of Norwich Free Academy, a Notary Public and enjoys cooking, party planning, exercise and reading.
Renee Bibeault

images/staff/14.jpgRenee began working at Mattern in December 2004. She has an Associates Degree in Accounting and 24 years experience as a bookkeeper. Renee’s duties include payroll and accounts payable. She is currently Treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 4 and enjoys traveling, gardening and books.
Bill Mazzella
Superintendent
images/staff/15.jpgBill has been in the construction field since 1977 initially working in the residential field. In 1988 Bill started his career with Mattern. He has worked on many major projects throughout the last 21 years including The Garde Arts Theater, United Community and Family Services Rock Nook and several Xtra Mart service stations.
In his spare time, Bill enjoys spending time with family and traveling on his motorcycle.
John Hopper
Superintendent
images/staff/17.jpgJohn began his career at Mattern in 1997. John was hired as a laborer and has since worked as a carpenter’s helper, carpenter, and superintendent. In October 2005 John left Mattern for a period of self employment, returning to Mattern in October 2006.
John entered the US Army in 1984 as a Communications Equipment Operator. In 1997 he left the active component of the Army, and in 2000 joined the US Army Reserves, Military Intelligence Field. He was deployed in support of Homeland Security Operations, & Operations in Afghanistan from October 2001 – 2002 and a brief period in 2003. In 2007 John retired from the US Army at the rank of First Sergeant and is currently in the Retired Reserves, Rank/Title: First Sergeant, US Army (Retired).
Some of John’s projects include several major renovations at Wm. W. Backus Hospital, a recital hall and recording studio at Connecticut College, UBS Tenant fit-out, GSA Tenant fit-out, Union Plaza shell renovations, renovations at the Arc of New London and a residential “mezzanine” addition.
John’s hobbies include music, woodworking, Renaissance Period Faires & Festivals, classic cars and shows, and bowling.
